Welcome to my media portfolio, The Dreaming Swan!
I’m Tammie Gercken. I am a multimedia specialist with professional experience in writing, video production, social media management, photography and graphic design.
I started my career in local journalism writing freelance articles for The News Herald newspaper in Morganton, North Carolina as a member of the Morganton Writers’ Group. I then worked as a staff writer for The News Herald for seven years before experiencing a layoff. During that time, I received four awards from the North Carolina Press Association and a publication award from the North Carolina Society of Historians for my work. I also learned basic video production on the job, including filming and editing. Following the layoff, I had a couple columns published by The Paper community newspaper in Morganton.
I currently work as the fundraising assistant for the Western Piedmont Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising organization for Western Piedmont Community College. I handle all of the organization’s media communications, including press releases and a bi-monthly newsletter, and create content for all of its social media accounts. I have done video production work, scholarship development, grant writing assistance and event promotion on the job.
While I’m at WPCC, I am taking classes in the audio-video production technology program to take my video production skills to the next level. This coursework also will include training in digital animation, motion graphics and web design.
In my quest to live a totally creative life, I’m striving to become a full-stack digital content creator and media strategist, combining the skills of writing, photography, videography and graphic design to become a one-stop media shop for employers/potential clients.
